Built on Principle, Shaped by Place

Our practice is grounded in the distinct legal landscape of East Malaysia — where heritage, commerce, and community intersect.

Our Story

Basalt Legal was founded in Kota Kinabalu with a straightforward idea: that legal services in Sabah should be shaped by an understanding of the people and industries they serve, not imported wholesale from elsewhere. The name itself speaks to that intent — basalt is a stone formed under pressure, enduring and unassuming, much like the approach we try to bring to every engagement.

Our founders spent their early careers working across both Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, and it became clear that certain legal matters in Sabah and Sarawak demand a different kind of attention. Native customary rights, for instance, involve a layered interplay of state land ordinances, adat customs, and constitutional protections that simply don't arise in the same way on the peninsula. Similarly, the shipping and logistics industry here operates with its own set of practical realities — port access, cross-border trade with neighbouring regions, and supply chain structures that reflect the geography of Borneo.

We chose to build a focused practice rather than a broad one. By concentrating on three areas — native customary rights advisory, shipping and logistics contract review, and social enterprise legal structuring — we can invest the time and depth that each matter deserves. This isn't about limiting what we do; it's about doing it well.

Over the years, we've had the privilege of working with indigenous communities navigating complex land claims, logistics companies tightening their contractual arrangements, and social entrepreneurs laying the legal groundwork for ventures that balance purpose with sustainability. Each engagement has deepened our understanding and sharpened our practice.

Every engagement follows a documented workflow — from initial consultation through to delivery of final documents. This ensures consistency and accountability across all matters.

We follow the requirements of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) in our handling of personal information, with secure digital storage and regular access reviews.

Cultural Competence

For native land matters, our team undergoes ongoing training in the cultural practices and customary governance structures of Sabah's indigenous communities.

Continuing Education

Our lawyers regularly attend seminars and training programmes on developments in Malaysian land law, commercial law, and social enterprise regulation.

What Drives Our Practice

Legal practice in Sabah sits at the intersection of multiple legal traditions. State land ordinances in Sabah and Sarawak operate differently from those in Peninsular Malaysia, and the recognition of native customary rights adds another layer of complexity. For businesses engaged in maritime trade, the port of Kota Kinabalu and surrounding logistics corridors present contractual considerations that reflect the region's unique geography and trade patterns.

At Basalt Legal, we've built our expertise around these intersections. Our advisory on native customary rights draws on both statutory frameworks and the lived realities of indigenous communities. Our contract review work is informed by practical experience with the shipping routes, warehousing practices, and trade regulations that define commerce in East Malaysia. And our social enterprise structuring service reflects a growing recognition that purpose-driven organisations need legal foundations as robust as those of any commercial entity.

We believe that legal counsel should be an enabling force — something that helps people and organisations move forward with clarity and confidence. That belief shapes how we engage with every client, whether an individual landowner or a multinational freight operator.
